Who Invented the Aeroplane?

Image
When you think of the first airplane, who do you think about? Most people think about Orville and Wilbur Wright. And, December 17, 1903 is the day to remember. That was the day that Orville won the toss of the coin. He made the first successful powered flight in history! The place was Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Wright Brothers' dream of inventing a flying machine had come true. It all started when Orville was 7 and Wilbur was 11 years old. Their father, Bishop Milton Wright, gave them a toy helicopter. It really flew. That toy made them dream of flying. Their parents helped them go after their dreams. Their mother, Susan K. Wright, was good with mechanical things. She went to college in Indiana. Very few women went to college at that time. She was very good in both math and science classes. Her boys learned a lot from her. The boys still wanted to know about flight as they grew up. They read everything they could find about it. They studied what other people lear

Ministry of Defence scraps $500 million Israeli missile deal, wants DRDO to make in India

Image
Asking the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to indigenously develop and produce a Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) for the Army, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has decided to cancel the $500 million deal for Spike ATGM with Israel. The deal, seen as another proof of growing Indo-Israel defence cooperation, was expected to be signed after price negotiations with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems of Israel were completed last year. In anticipation of this deal, Rafael had entered into a joint venture with Kalyani group for missile production in India. The missile sub-systems manufacturing facility, based near Hyderabad, was inaugurated in August. Ministry sources told The Indian Express that the decision to cancel the deal was based on the consideration that importing a foreign ATGM at this stage would adversely impact the programme for indigenous development of the weapon system by DRDO. Earlier, India had also rejected an offer from US-based Ray

Here's a test case for ease of doing business in India: A pilot rescued from red tape by PMO

Image
World Bank's recent Ease of Doing Business report, which showed India taking a big leap by going up 30 spots, generated a lot of debate. Many claim that the index does not reflect the ground reality which remains to be difficult. They are right—and wrong too. That's what the story of this inspired pilot proves.  Captain Amol Yadav, a Mumbai-based innovator who has built a six-seater aircraft on his rooftop, learnt the hard way that doing business in India was hardly easy when he ran from pillar to post to get his project registered with the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). For six long years, Yadav struggled with bureaucracy to just get a chance to demonstrate his prototype to the government so that he could get necessary approval and work on its commercialization.  Yadav's aircraft is not just a cranky idea brought to life an eccentric amateur. Yadav is now on the verge of completing his 19-seater aircraft, the first to be built indigenously,
